After Impact Golf, flick your wrist

equipment golf

During a golf swing, many players have a tendency to bow their lead wrist, which can either close the clubface or give it a draw or fade. Bowing the wrist helps you make more solid shots but can also cause club shaft lean and clubshaft angulation. Golf clubs are intended to have a fixed amount of clubshaft elevation at impact. Typically, golfers can expect their clubface to be at least 30 degrees closed relative to the ball-target line at the P4 position. Players will vary in how much they close their clubfaces. Pay attention to your wrist position when swinging. If you find that your clubface often slices or hooks, check your wrists for cupping. This is a common issue in golf swings and can easily be corrected with simple wrist-hinge.

Golfers who use a golf bowed wrist method are more apt to release their hands during impact. This technique can lead to clubshaft angulation in the latter part of a swing. Bowed wrists also give players greater clubface control, as well as the ability to hit the ball farther. Many golf instructors believe that bowing one's lead wrist can close the clubface and square it at contact. The effect of bowing the wrist is to increase clubface opening. This phenomenon can occur if the lead hand is radially deviated.

The following images capture the lead wrist bowing technique used by three professional golfers. Collin Morikawa uses the bowing wrist technique. The lead hand moves forward, targetward and begins to bow the lead wrist. He continues to bow until impact. In the downswing, he will increase his bowing. He does not bow his lead wrist as much in the early followthrough as he does later in swing. Because Collin Morikawa has a weak hand grip, this is why he bows his lead wrist less in the early followthrough.

Henrik Stenson uses a neutral hand grip. Throughout the downswing, Henrik Stenson is able to keep his lower forearm and lower radial bone in line. Henrik Stenson does have a bowed wrist at impact. He still has his LFFW/GFLW at P4. He also has a bowed trail wrist.

In contrast, Jon Rahm uses early lead forearm supination and increased lead wrist bowing. Just before impact, he starts to bow his lead hand. It increases in the later downswing. At P7.4, he also has a very bowed left wrist. Bowing of the lead wrist also affects the right hand's DHhand release action. This is due to the lead wrist moving 14 degrees in the direction that the "lead hand extends" between P6-impact. However, the left wrist is bent at impact even though it isn't moving quickly during the early followthrough.

An angulation problem in the clubshaft can occur when the lead wrist bows. If the lead wrist becomes more ulnarly curved, the angulation in the clubshaft will also increase.
